The circuit has a terminal connection (3), for connection to the actuator terminal and by which the control stage is provided with a voltage, and a control terminal (12) for connection to the control port (10) and by which, in a special case, a low level is applied by the microprocessor (11) to the control stage. Depending on the voltage levels at the terminal connection and the control terminal, a control signal is emitted to the actuator (6) which is amplified by a driver stage (5). The control stage has a transistor (T1), the input of which is connected via a voltage divider (7) to the terminal connection and to the control terminal of the control stage. The voltage divider is designed so that in normal operation, with the application of a terminal voltage to the actuator terminal, the occurring voltage level at the control terminal is recognized by the microprocessor as high level and the transistor switches through. A decoupling diode (D1) is connected in the flow direction between the terminal connection and the voltage divider. The terminal connection is connected to earth by way of a discharge resistor and the driver stage is connected by way of a diagnostic line to a diagnostic port (16) of the microprocessor. An Independent claim is included for a method for maintaining the instantaneous state of an actuator, controlled by a microprocessor, during a dip in the supply voltage.
