PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit both smoke and NOx from being discharged from an internal combustion engine and to precisely calculate variation in intake volume of each cylinder irrespective of variation in fuel injection volume of each cylinder. SOLUTION: This device for detecting variation in intake volume among cylinders in a multicylinder internal combustion engine in which the volume of produced soot is gradually increased up to its peak when the volume of inert gas fed into a combustion chamber 5 is increased, and the temperature of fuel on combustion in the combustion chamber 5 and the temperature of gas therearound become lower than a temperature at which the smoke is produced, so that substantially no smoke is produced, detects an angular speed of the engine during operation stroke including expansion stroke and combustion stroke of the cylinders with the use of a crank sensor 52 and an accelerator sensor 60. Accordingly, variation in intake volume fed into the cylinders can be calculated.
