PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new polynucleotide which has high homology to a nucleic acid coding for def1 polypeptide having a specific amino acid sequence, and can be used for screening antibiotics, and for diagnosing and treating the infection by streptococci and etc. SOLUTION: A new polynucleotide is provided which has high homology at 70% or higher to a nucleic acid coding for def1 polypeptide having the amino acid sequence shown by the formula, and can be used for screening compounds with respect to antibiotic activities, and for diagnosing and treating the infection by Streptococcus pneumoniae and so on. This isolated polynucleotide is obtained by screening a chromosomal DNA clone library of S. pneumoniae strain 0100993 in Escherichia coli or other appropriate hosts using a radio-labelled oligonucleotide derived from its partial sequence, preferably having a length 17 times or longer. |
