PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required by a three-dimensional input device for making three-dimensional input at a prescribed viewing angle without narrowing the distance range in which three-dimensional input can be made nor lowering the resolution of the device. SOLUTION: In a three-dimensional input device which projects reference light beam U upon an object so as to scan a virtual surface, periodically takes the picture of the object during scanning by using an image pickup device which can selectively read out an arbitrary extent in a light receiving surface S2, and outputs the data corresponding to the incident position of the reference light beam U after the beam U is reflected by an object on the light receiving surface S2, a controller which makes the image pickup device output picked-up images by thinning out picture elements in the direction corresponding to the main scanning direction of the virtual surface on the light receiving surface S2 is provided.
