PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operability of a select lever by switching a shift mode from an automatic shift mode to/from a manual shift mode when non-operation of a mode selecting switch is operated after the lapse of prescribed selection stand-by time in a condition in which the shift mode is switched to a drive range by a select lever. SOLUTION: In a transmission control device 32, it is judged that a mode selecting switch 28 is in an ON-condition for a prescribed switching setting time or more after an OFF-condition of the mode selecting switch 28 is passed for a prescribed switching stand-by time, in a condition in which it is judged that the position of a select lever is a drive range position. Then, a shift mode is transferred from an automatic shift mode to a manual shift mode. Even if a drive range is selected from an neutral range by operating the select lever while erroneously pushing a mode selecting switch 28 by a driver, it is eliminated that the shift mode is transferred to the manual shift mode in a continuously variable transmission, and it is also possible to improve operability.
