PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor laser for appropriately controlling the quantity of light of a laser beam, that is emitted from a semiconductor laser element by appropriately applying the laser beam for monitoring which is emitted from a semiconductor laser element to a photodetector for monitoring. SOLUTION: In a semiconductor device, a heat sink 1 is provided with a semiconductor laser element 2, and a photodetector 4 with a light reception surface 4a for applying a laser beam for monitoring emitted from the semiconductor laser element 2. In the semiconductor device, a stepped part 6 with a bottom surface 61 at a position lower than an upper surface 1a of the heat sink 1 is provided at the upper portion of the heat sink 1. Then, the semiconductor laser element 2 is arranged on the bottom surface 61 of the stepped part 6, and the emission part of the laser beam for monitoring is located at the upper portion of a light reception surface 4a of the photodetector 4.
