PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a blank coupling type joint part between optical fibers which enables an operator of a splicing device to obtain an optimum slicing result even if this operator has no knowledge on the details of fiber characteristics. SOLUTION: Both fiber ends 1 and 2 are oriented so as to minimize the offset between the first and second optical fiber ends 1 and 2. An electromagnetic beam is inputted and coupled to the first fiber and the first intensity of the beam transmitted from the first optical fiber to the second optical fiber is measured. The fiber ends 1 and 2 are so oriented that their cores approach each other at the same axis and the electromagnetic beam is inputted and coupled to the first fiber. The second intensity of the beam transmitted from the first optical fiber to the second optical fiber is measured. The fiber ends are then joined by heating and in this case, the energy supplied to the fiber ends or the temperature at the fiber ends depends upon the ratio of the first and the second intensity measured in the manner described above, by which the joint part is formed. |
