PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting natural motion of a person, i.e., the direction of face including inclination, without imposing any burden on a user. SOLUTION: Image of face is picked up by means of a camera 1, skin color region is extracted from a face image picked up at a skin color region extracting section 3 and then the region of eye and mouth is extracted from the skin color region at a face feature extracting section 5. Width parameters of images at right eye, left eye, mouth and skin regions are calculated at a face direction extracting section 7 and compared with a lookup table prestored in a parameter storing section 9 thus detecting.
