PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maximally extract light flux deterioration preventing effect and a consumed mercury amount reduction effect. SOLUTION: This fluorescent lamp has a metal oxide 8 which is other than phosphor particles in a phosphor film 3, and a glass protection film 9 made of a metal oxide other than phosphor particles on the surface of the phosphor film 3 at the side of airtight space 2. These metal oxides have a different or the same starting material at introduction, with the chemical compositions of a final product being different from each other. As a result, a metal oxide forming the glass protective film 9 and a metal oxide 8 in the phosphor film 3 display a barrier function for restraining such various damages as giving a cause for mercury adsorption or beam deterioration to a minimum level. As a whole, a consumed mercury amount reduction effect and a beam deterioration prevention effect can be extracted maximally, regarding a mercury consumption within a translucent airtight vessel 1 accompanying the lapse of lighting time, and beam deterioration.
