The force-transmitting member passes at a set tension between deflection rollers or tensioners. The adjusting device includes an opto-electronic position sensor, whose output is connected to a distance-frequency converter. The latter is coupled to an actuator to raise or lower the tension of the force-transmitting member. The opto-electronic position sensor and the distance-frequency converter may be in the form of a digital oscillation processor, with the force-transmitting member being excited to oscillate by a test load. An Independent claim is also included for a method of adjusting the tension of a force-transmitting member.
