' A diesel-electric locomotive has a fan cooling system and hydraulic operated louvres for the engine and brake resistances, both hydraulic systems being part of the same circuit the louvres associated with the engine being controlled by a thermostat and the louvres for cooling the brake resistances being operated automatically when the driving engine is changed over to resistance braking. A set of louvres 2 controlled by a hydraulic device 4 against the action of a spring 6 is provided for the electric resistances 1, and a set of louvres 3 controlled by a hydraulic device 5 against the action of a spring 7 is provided for the radiator 20 of the engine, not shown.- A pump 8 drives the hydraulic motor 9 of a fan 10 and a conduit 11 from the supply side and a return line 19 are connected to a regulator 15 provided with a piston 16 moved by means not shown in response to the temperature of the engine cooling water. A "shut off" element 12 is provided in the line 11 and the hydraulic devices 4 and 5 are connected to the conduit 11 and regulator 15 respectively. When the locomotive starts to move, the regulator element 15 and shut-off device 12 are in the positions of Fig. 2, the piston 16 being withdrawn in the regulator 15 and allowing short circuit between the pressure and return lines, the position of the element 12. also short circuiting the controller 4 and both sets 2 and 3 of louvres are closed. At the desired running temperature, the thermostatic control moves piston 16 to the position of Fig. 3a allowing a limited opening of louvres 3 by operation of controller 5. A fully opened position shown in Fig. 3b may be reached. In the operation of braking, the device 12 is put in the position of Fig. 4b, the devices 4 and 5 then being in series and both sets of louvres are open. As the cooling water temperature drops, the position of Fig. 4a is reached and only louvres 2 are open.
