PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal element exhibiting light-transmission state without applying voltage and light-scattering state under the application of voltage. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal element is provided with a pair of transparent substrates 1 3 having transparent electrodes 1a, 3a and oriented films 1b, 3b and a liquid crystal material 5 sandwiched between the transparent substrates 1, 3 and exhibits light-transmission state without applying voltage and light- scattering state under the application of voltage. The liquid crystal material 5 is produced by mixing a high molecular liquid crystal exhibiting nematic phase at the working temperature with a low molecular liquid crystal exhibiting nematic phase at the working temperature at a prescribed mixing ratio to form nematic region and smectic region mixed with each other at the working temperature and is sandwiched between the transparent substrates 1, 3 in homogeneously oriented state.
