PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a printer in which a printable area can be extended up to the maximum of sheet length. SOLUTION: Control section 3 of a printer has a section 352 for measuring the length of a sheet under feeding and printing based on a sheet detection signal from a photosensor 19 and the driving conditions of a motor received from a motor control section 37. Information indicative of the length of a print target sheet is delivered from a computer. An area determining section 351 compares an actual measurement of sheet length with a value represented by the sheet length information and sets an extended printable area exceeding a standard printable area depending on the comparison results so that printing is carried out across that area.
