PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controlling method of the running speed of a material to be rolled by which the control of the heating temp. and cooling temp. is easy even when thickness is changed during rolling. SOLUTION: At the time of flying thickness change for changing the thickness of the material 1 to be rolled during rolling by changing the roll gap of each rolling stand 3a-3g at the same time that the thickness changing position of the material to be rolled reaches each rolling stand 3a-3g, the circumferential speed of the roll of each rolling stand 3a-3g is controlled so that the mass flow of the material 1 to be rolled on the inlet side of the rolling stand 3a on the most upstream side in the traveling direction of the material 1 to be rolled or the mass flow of the material 1 to be rolled on the outlet side of the rolling stand 3g on the most downstream side in the traveling direction of the material 1 to be rolled is always constant.
