PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a high untreated water throughput to be stably obtained for a long time by changing the hourly throughput in accordance with the water quality indices of the untreated water to be treated, in a method for operating a filter membrane module device which pressurizes the untreated water and send it to a filter membrane module to clean the untreated water. SOLUTION: The untreated water supplied into an untreated water tank 2 from an untreated water supply aperture 9 is further sent to a filter membrane module 1 with the help of an untreated water supply pump 3, and the permeation water is supplied into a permeation water tank 5 through a permeation water line 11 to obtain the filtered water from a permeation water intake aperture 10. In addition, the flow of the untreated water is controlled at a specified level by adjusting a control valve 7 based on information from a flow sensor 8. In this case, information to be supplied from a water quality examination device 4 is sent to a controller 16 to control the flow of the untreated water in accordance with a calculated flow set value. The water quality indices are values which quantitatively indicate the level of water quality and the quantity of a substance contained in water. That is, the indices are based on turbidity and chromaticity, for example and it is possible to set an appropriate number of the kinds of water quality index according to the properties of the untreated water, when the appropriate water quality indices are selected for application.
