PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To store cumulative historical information starting from a first initialization. SOLUTION: A cumulative historical information read from an MIC is stored in a work RAM of a tape streamer drive to update the cumulative historical information accompanying with the recording or playback operation after loading a tape cassette (S001-S007). At the time of detection of an unload instruction from a host computer, the updated cumulative historical information in the work RAM is stored in the MIC (S008-S010). It is formatted when the cumulative historical information is stored in the work RAM after loading the tape cassette. After the formatting ends, the cumulative historical information stored in the work RAM is stored in the MIC.
