PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain reading of an image with high quality regardless of less storage capacity by controlling the scanner such that an invisible light is emitted onto an original image to read the original and a visible light is emitted onto the original image to read the original. SOLUTION: A film scanner consists of a film carriage 1, a lamp 3 that has a light emission characteristic from a visual light wavelength region to an infrared ray wavelength region and acts like a light source of a visual light and an invisible light (infrared ray), a mirror 4, a lens 5, and a line sensor 6 or the like. Then the film scanner applies infrared ray scanning prior to visual light scanning to obtain image information of a film and stores range information of dust or flaw on the film obtained by the infrared ray scanning to a storage circuit. Then the scanner conducts image processing that corrects effect of dust or dirt onto image information of the film obtained by the visual light scanning by calling the range information of the dust or flaw on the film stored in the storage circuit after obtaining the image information of the film by the visual light scanning.
