PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device which allows the observation and projection of full-color images without mosaics in the projected images or observed images by constituting the device in such a manner that the incident angle of the principal ray of one primary color light ray incident on a beam splitting surface when transmitting through the splitting surface is made smaller than the incident angle when reflecting at the beam splitting surface. SOLUTION: The device is so constituted that the incident angle of the principal ray of the at least one primary color light ray of the second and third primary color light rays incident on the splitting surface of a polarization beam splitter when transmitting through the beam splitting surface is made smaller than the incident angle when reflecting at the beam splitting surface. For example, the incident angleθ1 of the principal ray with the beam splitting surface 3a is 50 deg. at 45 deg.+5 deg. with respect to the B(blue) light. At this time, the S polarized light component of the B light is reflected to be directed toward a liquid crystal panel 2. When the light is modulated and reflected by the liquid crystal panel 2 and is again passed through the splitting surface 3a, the incident angleθ2 of the B light with the splitting surface 3a is 40 deg. at 45 deg.-5 deg.. Namely, the respective elements are set so as to attainθ2<θ1.
