摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display device in which the response speed is made fast, a good non-lighting condition is maintained, the contrast is made high and the display quality is made good. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal cell 10 is made of liquid crystal molecules having spiral structures with twisting angles of not less than 180 degrees and not larger than 280 degrees and sandwitched between substrates 3 and 4. For the liquid crystal cell 10,Δn.d of a phase plate 6 is selected so that the transmissivity while no electric field is applied is approximately made same as the transmissivity in a non-lighting condition. It is more desirable that the liquid crystal molecules have spiral structures in the gap stipulated by spacers 2 having diameters of not larger than 5.5 microns andΔn.d is selected so that the transmissivity of the plate 6 is made not larger than 3.0% in a non-lighting condition. Moreover, in the liquid crystal cell, the phase plate ofΔn.d, in which the transmissivity during a non-lighting becomes not larger than 3.0%, is aligned to an optical axis and laminated so that the contract becomes optimum.
