Disclosed is a durably wettable, liquid pervious web that is particularly suitable as a topsheet for absorbent articles such as baby and adult diapers and feminine hygiene products. The durably wettable, liquid pervious web is derived from a polymeric film or nonwoven to which is applied a thin organic material onto at least one surface of the starting film or nonwoven. The thi n organic coating is in the form of a polymer and is obtained by after-glow (o r remote) plasma-induced polymerization of a polymerizable unsaturated compoun d, preferably a polymerizable vinyl or isopropenyl compound, under specific plasma conditions.
