PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the preparation of a stable metal carbonyl standard gaseous composition contg. a metal carbonyl in a concn. of a few ppm level. SOLUTION: This preparation for preparing a standard gasseous composition contg. a metal carbonyl, comprises: the steps of placing a metal to be formed into a corresponding metal carbonyl, in a first test vessel maintained at a first temp.; pressurizing the first test vessel with a carbon monoxide-containing gas supplied from a carbon monoxide source container; heating the contents in the first test vessel to a second temp. at a heating rate sufficient to initiate formation of the corresponding metal carbonyl, to form a metal carbonyl- containing gaseous composition; transferring a portion of the metal carbonyl- containing gaseous composition from the first test vessel to a second test vessel maintained at a third temp. lower than the second temp., to quell the reaction of carbon monoxide with the metal; and diluting the metal carbonyl-containing gaseous composition in the second test vessel with an inert gas supplied from an inert gas source container.
