PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To harden coating sludge promptly and sufficiently by heating the wet coating sludge in a liquid having a higher boiling point than that of water and evaporating/separating water in the sludge. SOLUTION: Water W which caught coating mist in a purification apparatus 4 floates/separates coating sludge S flocculated in water in a storage process in a separation tank 7. The floated/separated sludge S is subjected to preliminary dewatering treatment by a dewaterer 10. The treated sludge S, while being agitated by an agitator 14 in a heating tank 13, is heated in oil at a temperature between 100 deg.C and the boiling point of the oil, preferably 120-140 deg.C. By the heating, residual water and a solvent in the sludge S are evaporated/ separated efficiently, and the sludge S is hardened efficiently in 2-3 min into a granulated plastic state.
