PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound having not only an extremely high insecticidal and acaricidal activity but also high safety for target crops and useful as an insecticidal and acaricidal agent. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I [R1, R2 are each H or a 1-4C alkyl, or R1 and R2 are bound to each other to form a 2-6C alkylene; X is a 1-4C alkyl, a 1-4C halogenoalkyl or the like; Y is a halogen or nitro; Z is O or a group of formula II (R3 is H, a 1-4C alkyl or the like); (n) is 1-3], for example, 3-chloro-3-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-5,5-pentamethylenepyrrolidine-2,4-dione. The compound of formula I is obtained by halogenating a compound of formula III with a halogenating agent such as chlorine in an inert solvent such as methylene dichloride or in the absence of a solvent usually at -30 deg.C to the boiling point of the used solvent.
