PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite material having a metallic color and a photocatalytic function and its production method. SOLUTION: In this composite material, a metal layer containing photocatalyst particles is formed on a surface of a base material by electroplating or a reducing reaction by a reducing agent using an electroplating bath or a chemical plating bath wherein photocatalytic particles or metal-supporting photocatalytic particles are suspended and dispersed. In the production of the composite material, use is made of the plating bath wherein dispersibility is improved by protecting the photocatalytic particle with a surfactant and, after the metal layer containing the photocatalytic particle is formed by electroplating or a reducing reaction by a reducing agent and thereafter, many photocatalytic particles are exposed on a front layer by using chemical etching or electrolytic etching.
