PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject material which causes no trouble such as aggregation when doped in an emitting layer by employing a material comprising a specific polycyclic aromatic compound. SOLUTION: There is provided a material for an organic electroluminescence element which is a compound represented by the formula. An organic electroluminescence element can be constituted of a hole injection layer, a hole transporting layer and a light emitting layer, each comprising an organic compound, laminated between a pair of electrodes at least one of which is transparent, and preferably an electron transporting layer comprising an organic compound is further formed between the cathode of the pair of electrodes and the emitting layer. The compound represented by the formula is incorporated in an amount preferably within 0.1-30 mole wt.%. This incorporation results in an emission of high luminescence and high efficiency. The compound of the formula can be obtained in a high yield, for example, by reacting 1-aminoanthraquinone with benzyl chloride in the presence of sodium methoxide in dimethyl sulfoxide.
