A hammer mill for comminuting metal scrap comprises a casing having an inlet opening 18 and enclosing a hammer unit comprising hammers 28 pivotally mounted on axially-spaced rotary discs 27, the hammers co-operating with a comb-like anvil 34 provided at the lower side of the opening 18 and the comminuted scrap being thrown through a discharge passage 20 closed by a grid 21.
