The system has an inflatable restraint (42) mounted on an interior facing surface (38) of an interior body structure, such as an A-pillar or roof rail, and an energy absorbing member (46) spacably mounted therefrom defining a first cavity (54). The cavity has a first section (56) containing the inflatable restraint and a second section spaced from the innermost surface of the vehicle body structure. A trim piece (60) is spaceably mounted to the energy absorbing member and co-operative therewith to move from a covering position to a deployed position so as to partially deflect from the vehicle body structure.
