Cover for vehicle airbag is pressure injection molded in elastomer with contoured film preform on front surface for bright appearance, with flap and hinge sections not impeding deployment. The flap includes hinge(s), and an edge through which the airbag exits. The outer face has a mounting, bounding and surrounding flap section(s) completely. A seam in the front panel surface, permits airbag deployment and defines flap edges. It does not overlap the mounting area. A decorative preform (12) is applied to the mounting around the flap(s), without overlapping it completely. When the airbag is blown out, flap(s) move away from the decorative preform application, but there is no release from the front panel, nor is airbag deployment impaired. An Independent claim is included for the method of manufacturing the covering. The decorative sheet is vacuum-formed in a cavity, producing the preform, into which is cut a central opening. This is located in a mold and injected, completing the cover (10) with application of adequate pressure and temperature. Preferred features: The preform comprises a plastic film with decoration. The film is blended-in and contoured to match the outer sheet of the front panel. There are two flaps (30, 32) in the front panel. The preform is fully bonded around them, on the mounting. Flaps and mounting form an integral front panel, with the form of the sections embossed on the outer surface of the preform.
