Antistatic plastics compositions comprise a carbonyl-containing polymer and, as an antistatic agent, lithium perchlorate distributed substantially uniformly throughout the polymer. The term "carbonyl-containing polymer" is used to include polyesters, polyamides, polycarbonates, polyvinyl acetate and acrylic polymers; examples of the latter are homopolymers or copolymers of acrylate and/or methacrylate esters, particularly the C1-C8-alkyl esters. The compositions may include additives such as plasticizers, fillers, pigments, e.g. carbon black, dyes and stabilizers and can be shaped to form articles, e.g. sound-reproduction records. In the production of the acrylic compositions, the lithium perchlorate can be introduced in the acrylic monomer, which is then polymerized in bulk, solution, emulsion or suspension using an anionic initiator or a free radical initiator such as lauroyl peroxide, 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide, azodiisobutyronitrile, benzoyl peroxide, acetyl peroxide and t-butyl peroxyisobutyrate. Bulk polymerization may be effected in a mould.
