A combustion air management and emission control system (18) injects supplemental air directly into combustion chambers (14A-14D) of a diesel engine (10) to reduce particulates in exhaust gases being emitted from the engine (10). A portion of intake air flowing toward an intake manifold (12) of the engine (10) is diverted to a compressor (30) so that controlled quantities of pressurized supplemental air to be injected directly into each of the combustion chambers (14A-14D) while the piston (36A-36D) within the combustion chambers (14A-14D) is in its expansion and/or exhaust strokes. At least a portion of the diverted intake air can be directed through a selectively permeable membrane device (20) so that oxygen-enriched air and nitrogen-enriched air are produced. At least a portion of the oxygen-enriched air is supplied to the compressor (30) so that the supplemental air is injected into the combustion chambers (14A-14D) will contain a desired, elevated amount of oxygen.
|
