<p>A conventional magnetomechanical EAS marker (10) is modified to aid in authenticating an article of merchandise to which the marker (10) is to be applied. The marker (10) includes a housing (12), a magnetostrictive element (16) in the housing (12), a bias magnet (18) mounted to the housing (12), and an authentication element (20) for indicating the authenticity of the item to which the marker (10) is to be applied. The authentication element (20) may be a printed logo, bar code or character string or a discrete element having distinctive or rare characteristics.</p> |
