PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for tire tread that has largely improved gripping properties particularly on the wet road surface with retention of good abrasion resistance and high mileage and provide pneumatic tires using the same. SOLUTION: This rubber composition for tire tread comprises (A) the rubber component mainly containing a diene synthetic rubber, a mixture thereof with a natural rubber and at least 20 wt.% of a styrene-butadiene rubber as a minor component in an amount of 100 pts.wt., (B) 5-50 pts.wt. of aluminum hydroxide, (C) >=5 pts.wt. of silica, or in addition, (D) >=1 pt.wt. of carbon black where the total content of (B) and (C) or of (B), (C) and (D) is 40-80 pts.wt. The rubber composition is used as a tread rubber for the objective pneumatic tires.
