A method of applying a coating to a surface of a substrate, comprising the steps of:introducing a substrate into an atmosphere which consists of at least one chemically reactive compound, water and at least one of nitrogen and argon, and thereafterusing a corona discharge on the surface of the substrate to form a coating from the reactive compound having an inhibiting effect on the permeability to vapor and/or gas.
