PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound in a high yield by converting a specific chiral biaryldicarboxylic acid compound into the corresponding acid anhydride, thermally treating the product and further hydrolyzing the treated product. SOLUTION: This method for producing a racemic biaryldicarboxylic acid compound of formula III comprises converting a chiral biaryldicarboxylic acid of formula I [the ring Ar is a (substituted) mono- to tri-cyclic aromatic ring; *exhibits the presence of axial chirality], preferably a (S)-biaryldicarboxylic acid compound of formula II, into the corresponding acid anhydride, thermally treating the obtained acid anhydride, and subsequently hydrolyzing the product. The compound of formula III is preferably optically resolved to obtain the enantiomer of the compound of formula I. The conversion of the compound of formula I into the corresponding acid anhydride may be carried out by reacting the compound of formula I with the reactive derivative of an aliphatic acid or sulfonic acid (for example, diphenylphosphoric acid chloride) or a halogenating agent (for example, thionyl chloride) in the presence of an acid- removing agent (for example, triethylamine) in a solvent (for example, methylene chloride).
