PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an antimicrobial agent capable of being applied to various methods of the antibacterial treatment of paper, and having a high antimicrobial activity, and further to provide a method of excellent antimicrobial treatment and to obtain antimicrobial paper. SOLUTION: This antimicrobial paper is obtained by treating paper with nalidixic acid or a salt thereof. The method of producing the antimicrobial paper comprises coating paper with a solution, an emulsion or a suspension of the nalidixic acid or its salt or dipping the paper in the solution, the emulsion or the suspension. The method of the antimicrobial treatment of the paper comprises printing the paper with a printing ink containing the nalidixic acid or its salt. The antimicrobial agent for the paper contains the nalidixic acid or its salt as an active ingredient.
