An atrial cardio-verter (30) for cardio-verting the atrial of a heart while sustaining atrial pacing. The cardio-verter includes plural pacing modes including atrial pacing, atrial inhibited mode; atrial pacing, ventricular inhibited mode, an atrial tachyarrhythmia detector (64), and a mode control (73) for changing the mode from atrial pacing, atrial inhibited mode to atri al pacing, ventricular inhibited mode, when an atrial tachyarrhythmia is detected. A cardio-verter stage (74) applies cardio-verting energy to the atria responsive to the detecting, and after the pacing mode change.
