A conveyance system (10) is provided which includes a conveyance for conveying cargo and guide means to which the conveyance is displaceably mounted for guiding displacement of the conveyance. The system further includes winding means (16) connected via a cable to the conveyance for selectively displacing the conveyance and a linear motor (22) for at least assisting displacement of the conveyance along at least a portion of the guide means. The invention extends to a method of reducing tension in a cable of a mine shaft conveyance system.
