PURPOSE: A method for automatically controlling an X-position of a video cassette recorder is provided to simply and exactly control the X-position by detecting and correcting an error between an X-position recorded in a demonstration video tape and that set in the video cassette recorder. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the step of playing a demonstration tape by inserting the tape into the video cassette recorder, altering a phase difference of a control signal recorded in the tape in a play mode to perform an auto tracking operation, evaluating an X-position of the control signal recorded therein, and calculating an error between the evaluated X-position of the tape and that set in the video cassette recorder, and correcting the error to be stored as new X-position data.
