A control is provided for activation of the brake device (3) and can function mechanically, electrically by means of key switch, electronically by means of a capacitatively working sensor, opto-electronically, e.g. by means of a photoelectric beam, or by means of ultrasound. The control of the brake device is combined with that of the cleaning machine. DESCRIPTION OF DRAWING - The brake device has a brake shoe (5), which can be brought into locking or force engagement with at least one stairs step (4). The brake shoe is fixed on a pivot arm rotatably located on the cleaning machine. The pivot arm (6) is combined with a slide runner (8).
