PURPOSE: A highly safe high-chroma orange pearl pigment and a process for manufacturing it are provided for replacing a cadmium pigment. CONSTITUTION: The pigment comprises a flaky substrate having surfaces coated with metal oxide particles containing iron oxide. The metal oxide particles comprises fine spherical particles having 40-300 parts by weight of the iron oxide, to 100 parts of the flaky substrate, is coated onto the flaky substrate in suspension of the substrate in the presence of sulfate, persulfate and/or polysulfide, and the fine spherical particles further comprise less than 35 wt% of aluminum oxide, less than 2 wt% of calcium oxide, and/or less than 2 wt% of magnesium oxide.
