PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the adverse influence by irradiation with excess illumination light even when an endoscope light source device is used together with video signal processors of different kinds corresponding to an element shutter system, etc. SOLUTION: When a television camera which is mounted in a hard endoscope 2 and contains a CCD 33 is connected to a CCU 12 contg. a modulated light signal output circuit 38, the output signal of this modulated light signal output circuit 38 is inputted via a modulated light modulates cable 41 to the light source device 3A and automatically modulates the light quantity cast to an LG cable 4 from a discharge lamp 17 via a diaphragm drive circuit 25 by a modulated light circuit 45 and detects the kind of the CCU connected to the light source device 3A by a CCU connection detecting circuit 43. When the CCU for general use adopting an element shutter is connected, the max. irradiation light quantity to be cast to the LG cable 4 via a diaphragm operation limiting circuit 48 is limited to prevent the irradiation of the biotissue with the excess illumination light.
