The invention relates to a continuous device for applying compressive or tensile force to an object 1 displaceable in respect of the device, or part of the object situated on the device, by using at least two roll pairs 2, 3 or the like belonging to the device, which roll pairs are situated at an interval from one another in the direction of movement 17 of the object 1 and through the intervening roll nip 4, 5 of which the object 1 is designed to pass, to at least one roll 6 of at least one roll pair 2 of which a drive member 10 has been connected in support of the said roll 6 and therefore rotates with the roll 6, producing a rotational movement concentric with the axis of rotation of the roll 6, which drive member is in turn designed to transmit the said rotational movement to at least one roll 8 of the second roll pair 3 by means of mechanical transmission elements 11-15. A drive shaft 21, which is designed to rotate concentrically with the axis of rotation of the roll 6, but independently in respect of the said axis of rotation, and which drive shaft 21 is in turn designed to turn a power element 22, is designed to supply the drive force of the drive member 10.
