A strand for a rope has an outer lay comprising a plurality of helically twisted wires 1 of substantially the same diameter, and a plastics spacer 6, Fig. 1, pre-applied as a sheath to at least one but not all of the wires 1, or provided as an insert 8, Fig. 5 between at least two adjacent wires 1 but not between all of the wires, the or each spacer projecting radially outwardly of the strand so that, when two or more such strands are helically twisted to form a rope, spaces for impregnating plastics material are obtained between the strands at intervals along their lengths. The spacers 6 may 'be formed with passages (7) Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) to facilitate the intrusion of impregnating plastics material. The insert 8 may be in the form of a strip and may have an enlarged inner beaded edge.</p> |
