The method involves diffusing insulating material into a superconducting layer to form a surface barrier layer on the first superconducting layer and then applying a second superconducting layer. Preferably, both superconducting layers consist of YBaCuO. The insulating material preferably contains one or more of La, Sr, Al, Ca and Ta. The barrier layer preferably consists of Y1-xBa1CuxOy, where x = 0-1. Independent claims are also included for a Josephson junction produced using the method and a Josephson junction device produced using the method.
