An apparatus and corresponding method to detect the particles of radioactive decay generated in a sample (20) with radioactive material. An array (10) of detectors includes a first set of detectors (30) each with liquid scintillation material and a phototube and a second set of detectors (40) each with a crystalline solid. The electrical signals generated by the detectors in response to stimulation by the particles are analyzed to indicate the radioactive decay in the sample (20). Identification and quantitation of the radioactive nuclei in the sample (20) may also be performed.
