The invention relates to a device especially for use as a proximity sensor comprising a sensor unit which has an optical transducer, and an object that can be brought close to the transducer surface, whereby the average refractive index is determined by an evaluation device. The distance of an object from the transducer surface can be determined by detecting a change in the refractive index.
