PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a producing method of lumpy foam glass having high water absorptivity with uniform product quality and >=50% 24-hour water absorptivity. SOLUTION: The lumpy foam glass is obtd. by adding at least one kind of foaming agent selected from silicon carbide, fine powder carbon, calcium carbonate, barium carbonate and magnesium carbonate by 1.5 to 6.0% to a glass powder, calcining the powder under properly selected conditions of 850 to 970 deg.C calcination temp., 10 to 40 min calcination time and 3 to 30 mm thickness of the powder. The obtd. lumpy foam glass has 0.1 to 0.8 gf/cm3 bulk density and >=50% water absorptivity.
