PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain high-purity monochloroacetic acid hardly containing dichloroacetic acid. SOLUTION: This method for producing high-purity monochloroacetic acid comprises a process for hydrogenating monochloroacetic acid having 10 ppm to 2 wt.% dichloroacetic acid content and 0-5 wt.% acetic acid content. The hydrogenation can be carried out, for example, by using a palladium supported catalyst obtained by supporting 0.1-3 wt.% based on a carrier of palladium on the carrier selected from activated carbon and silica. The hydrogenation may be performed under normal pressure to 100 kPa (gauge pressure) at 100-180 deg.C. The molar amount of hydrogen supplied is, for example, about 1.2-15 times as much as dichloroacetic acid in a solution to be treated. The solution for hydrogenation may be repeatedly hydrogenated. |
