PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently remove org. chlorine compds. without producing nitrous acid or nitric acid which causes secondary pollution of soil and underground water by injecting hydrazine into polluted soil or the like to oxidize and decompose the compds. by using decomposing activity of ammonia oxidizing bacteria. SOLUTION: By this method, org. chlorine compds. such as trichloroethylene and dichloroethylene as pollutants in soil and under ground water are oxidized and decomposed by using the decomposing activity of ammonia oxidizing bacteria. As for the matrix for the ammonia oxidizing bacteria, not ammonia but hydrazine is used. Since hydrazine changes into nitrogen gas by oxidation with ammonia oxidizing bacteria and is then emitted as a harmless inert gas into air, hydrazine does not cause secondary pollution. Further, in the presence of hydrazine, the decomposing activity of ammonia oxidizing bacteria for org. chlorine compds. is promoted. By adding hydrazine, the decomposing activity of bacteria once decreased can be activated again.
