PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soft and strong composite wood material that is, a composite wood material with high specific strength. SOLUTION: This composite wood material is a wood material comprising small wood pieces and an adhesive component and the small wood pieces are made up of a high density material 1 with a density in air dry condition of 0.40 g/cm3 or more and a low density material 2 with below a density in air dry condition of 0.40 g/cm3. This composite wood material is manufactured by employing various means such as barking, cutting, shaving, splitting and crushing materials of various stages such as an unbarked log, a barked log, a rectangular lumber, an end piece and a small dia. wood to obtain medium and small pieces or fine fragments. Further, the adhesive component is applied to the surfaces of the small wood pieces of the high density material 1 and the low density material 2 and the small wood pieces are arranged and hot compression-molded in a molding device.
